The monster in my tummy is angry
I've recently finished my antibiotic regime to get rid of an infection of H. Pylori bacteria in my stomach. The doctor says I'll have a build up of excess acid in my stomach for up to three weeks after the infection is gone. This leaves one tired Alana up with heartburn at unfortunate hours.
Things I need to stay away from include:
pop
pop
deep-fried foods
or basically anything too acidic
The good news is this explains most of the reactions I've had recently with certain foods.

Labs don't die
Sometimes Physics makes me feel like this poor guy. I spent hours working on a lab only to find out that some of my data is crap and I'm probably going to have to redo parts of it. Bah!

Good reasons, I swears
Oh hey thar blog I've been ignoring.
I swear I had good reasons (Vancouver trip, Edmonton trip, getting hit by a car, having the flu, midterms, catching up from all those other reasons).
I promise I will catch up at some point. After I finish this assignment I'm working on. And the midterm on Tuesday. And the labs on Thursday. And the midterm and assignment I have to mark for Thursday. And I'm going to stop listing the things I have to do now.
Oh, it was also my 19th birthday.

Sleep is for chumps
Cleaning your ears is weird.
I know, right?
I just twisted some little piece of cotton around in my ear, started coughing uncontrollably, and they were totally related. There's nothing that makes me more uncomfortable than that feeling.
The closest thing to that kind of reaction I've ever had was when I had acupuncture. The doctor was twisting a needle between my eyebrows and my vision went away.

Google analytics is cool
Recently I've noticed I've got a little bit of activity from our friends down south. I found this pretty amusing, hopefully you will too:
State --- Google Search Term
Texas, North Carolina - "indecent exposure felony"
Illinois - "class two felony"
Alabama - "indecent exposure class "
I'm awesome.

I'm not the biggest gamer. No really, my first video game was a gameboy (Pokemon!), and I had nothing else until my parents bought me a PlayStation from a garage sale. I got a little exposure at my sitters, but not much.
I still haven't gotten over the concept that sometimes my roommates will be playing video games and talking to the people they're playing with. Seriously, I still turn to look whenever they compliment someone on their recent good shot.
I found out I will get to mark this semester! That's a big relief; no need to look for a part time job now! Huzzah!

Murderous Carrots Shouting Rainbows
I've rarely had to deal with the highly unpleasant experience of having a cold when it's ungodly hot. Yesterday I was so rundown I could barely stand for most of the day, and it was also one of the warmest days we've had all summer... and my first summer living in a house with no AC. It was a party, let me tell you.
Now, this poor blog has gone ignored for a week or two now, but for good reason, I promise! Okay, now where did I leave off?
The back pain did subside eventually, and we did make it out to go shopping for a bed. Kyle bought a queen boxspring, and I bought a King/Queen frame. Adding these to the decent mattress we were sleeping on made it livable! ( On a side note, the mattress we were sleeping on was actually a double -- no wonder we had trouble sharing! ) Now our newly fixed bed situation didn't last too long; we suddenly had five people living here, and Cody wanted his mattress back. We had thought there was an extra for him, but it had gotten mouldy :C. Ew. We managed for a couple days, because Chelsea had moved most of her stuff here, but wasn't actually staying with us, and Kyle borrowed her bed.
Work finished*. I had a free week to get ready for school. And that meant cleaning. And oh boy did we clean. Kyle put it nicely: "I've been cleaning straight for two days. Cleaning so much I still don't have a bed yet!" We moved my desk downstairs (we have about 6 computers running in the living room on average!) and got a little creative.
Fact: Both Kyle and I have decent twin beds.
Fact: Our new bed frame expands to a King.
Fact: Two twins side by side is roughly the same size as a King.
Fact: I have -no- floorspace anymore.
But oh man is it awesome. Not only that, but I have a kickass bed set for it! I will post pictures of it once it is wintery enough to need more than a thin blanket.
So, cleaning sucked up an entire week frighteningly fast. Here are a couple highlights from between cleaning sessions:
I managed to convince my mom to come with the family to Dessart Sweets for icecream. We were sitting on the steps of one of the nearby stores while we all finished our treats, when a cat wandered over. My mom quickly made friends with it and offered it some of her ice cream cone, and it wasted no time taking some. Mom and I both thought this was hillariously cute, and tried to convince Kyle to let the cat lick some ice cream off his finger (he refused.). Once he had finished my Smore Parfait for me, he did let the cat lick the spoon clean.
A couple days ago (Saturday, Sept. 5th), me, Kyle, Chelsea, Janice, and Ben went on a trek of Regina.
We walked from our house, around the lake to the Legislative Building to go on one of the guided tours (Janice is an expert in the Leg tours!) I gave Ben my camera, and he snapped many a picture for me! Next, we walked through the park to the Royal Sask Museum. On the way there, we passed through the city's Speaker's Corner. Ben and Janice goofed around for a bit.
Oh the museum, how I love it. I've always loved going there, for as long as I can remember. We did the walkthrough, and it was still as great as it's always been. Janice's favourite part is one square of a quilt from a reserve school(?) where young girls were tought to embroider.
Our guess is a Murderous Carrot (see the knife?) shouting rainbows.
To end the trip, we saw Megamunch!
*Hurrah!

Five people, one bathroom! EEek
Argh! My back has been killing me all day. It was worse yesterday, bad to the point that i just took some painkillers and slept because there was no way to be comfortable. Today its just complaining if I move, so that's an improvement, right?
Kyle's sister Chelsea is moving some of her stuff in today. She'll be living with us starting september, as well as Cody*. Five people in our house! Such excitment. I'm thankfully exempt from lifting things as per the killer back pain**. Hopefully they'll finish moving things in with time for us to go look around at Sears bargain center! Kyle and I are on the quest for a better bed, and at least a double. We've got a double bed in the basement at the moment, and my awesome twin in my room, but once Cody is living in the basement, we'll only be separated by a cheap shower curtain. That's hardly what I'd call private. So we're thinking of putting the bigger bed in my room (Goodbye, wonderful floorspace!).
My mind is quite excited trying to figure out what colour scheme I'll go with. It seems to be expecting a bit of a makeover, but I don't think my bank account agrees.

Translation Party
Oh man am I ever going to waste time on this! Basically, you give it a sentence or two and it translates it to Japanese and back to English and over and over until the sentence does not change. It's INSANE what it comes out to be sometimes.
For example:
To understand a man you should walk a mile in his shoes. If what he says still bothers you that's ok because you'll be a mile away from him and you'll have his shoes.
becomes
Miles, please understand the position of his feet. He is miles away, his shoes, [OK] junk].

400 babies!
Hello future people again! This is Alana from even more in the past than last time*!
If you've seen Idiocracy you probably remember Brawndo, the energy drink (much like Gatorade) that has managed to take over every niche water ever had except in the toilet. This is a Powerthirst commercial - a fictional energy drink based on Brawndo.
There are many other videos like this that are VERY much worth watching, but you have to dig a bit through the mess of videos like them. I'm not somewhere where I can look that much, but I will post an edit once I'm back from camping adding the missing recc'd videos.

Is this gonna be forever?
Hello future people! This is Alana from the past coming to bring your Youtube video!
We've all been a little out of it at one point. A bad combination of painkillers, actual anesthetic from the doctor, booze, whatever. For example, I know that two Tylenol1(with codeine) and two Gravol is tooooo much "drowsy" medication for me. That resulted in something very close to this poor little guy:
This video has its fair share of imitations and has inspired many more videos that you can search out if you wish. I'd recommend David after Divorce.

Algebraic!
This is a Nickelodeon short that Desiree showed me years ago. I heard a rumour that they might be basing a tv show on it and oh my goodness it's true. Its scheduled to air sometime in 2010. You have no idea how exciting that is to me!
I know this is a little strange, but if you do spend the time to watch at least part of it, wait until the mars scene!
I know this is a little strange, but if you do spend the time to watch at least part of it, wait until the mars scene!
I'm sooo tired.
Yay its almost the weekend! I just need to survive 3 hours of work and then we're off to the Waterton for camping and hiking. It's supposed to be raining all weekend, and I guess this will solidify in my mind how very not water-proof any of my clothes are. It's actually starting to worry me, so I may wander down to the university bookstore to see if they have anything.
Last night in our quest to find things we'd need for the trip, Kyle and I found a tiny little microphone that hooks up to my iPod and turns it into a voice recorder.
It's actually surprisingly good quality. Kyle was talking at a normal voice and I could pick him up quite well from two or three rooms away. Yeah. Very exciting. So I'm taking this with me and we can hope to have at least some interesting audio from the weekend.
Also taking my camera (of course) and should have a decent amount of pictures!
Well I've got three Youtube posts to throw together now. You'll still get them this weekend if I get my shit together!
Cheers!

Clash of the Titans
Well, things at work have managed to slow to an absolute halt. We're waiting for a baseplate to arrive so we can start construction, but the company providing it is having trouble and have delayed delivery. Also, the only other remaining task is with equipment that one of the grad students needs to use today.
I can honestly say that all I've done today is play on photoshop. We're making a game of clue about work, but that's besides the point.
With five people and nothing to do, eventually Youtube videos come up*! One of my coworkers managed to remind me of a classic video I hadn't thought of yet, and introduced another to me.
This is Sammy Stephens, the owner of Flea Market Montgomery, a flea market in Alabama. And this is his homemade ad for the store.
Be warned: This song sticks. I mean it. I had to write my Physics 111 final with this stuck in my head, and it was not pretty**.
Now, meet Mickey Ferguson. He's the weather forcaster for Good Day Alabama and FOX6. Boyy does he ever have fun with his job. It's like someone gave a five year old a green screen.
For those of you who were paying attention and noticed that both Stephens and Ferguson are from Alabama, bravo. I bet you can guess what that means. Oh yes, I'm serious.
Sammy Stephens + Mickey Ferguson = brain EXPLOSION.
yeah.
*Fact.
** Actually, I'm worried that if I post this I will have Kyle singing it at me for days.

Indecent exposure is a class two felony
There's nothing quite like waking up earlier than you meant to and feeling very much awake and productive. Actually making yourself a good breakfast* and having time to decide what you're going to make for lunch and actually making it. It's a great feeling. I suspect today will be better than yesterday.

Charlie the Unicorn
Youtube post number two is none other than the legen... dary Charlie the Unicorn.
A warning for those of you who haven't seen these before: its not recommended that you watch all 4 videos in a row.
These videos from FilmCow feature Charlie and two other unicorns who manage to annoy Charlie into coming on adventures with them. Each video of the triolgy features a song, and each video grows stranger and stranger.
I'd like a cuil rating from those of you who know of the theory.
So enjoy a true Youtube classic responsible for such quotes as:
Chaaaaaaarrrliieeee!
Shuuun the non-believer!
It's a magical Leoplurodon!
and of course,
We're on a bridge, Charlie!

Sounds like someone's got a case of the Mondays
I hate when you just can't shake a bad mood that makes everything worse.
The only thing worse than those days are days like that when things actually go wrong.
Or today.
I've been stuck in a funk pretty much since I woke up, and it seems to just be going downhill, fast. I spent nearly the last hour working with a supervisor trying to fix what appeared to be malfunctioning equipment. Finally after it all we discovered that I had been doing part of the procedure wrong* and it had finally been too much for the equipment. The only highlight was that he was quite nice about it, and was okay that I had essentially wasted his last hour**.
Now I'm sitting in the Physics lounge half an hour after work and I can't seem to find the energy to get up and go home.
I haven't felt this lousy since the day I was laid off.
* because I was trained wrong, but whatever
** he's known to be somewhat irritable

Domo-kun
I've always enjoyed looking for good youtube videos, and recommending them to my friends, but I've never had a list of my favourites. So I'm going to post a video every day until I run out of ones I remember easily.
This is the first episode of Domo-kun, for all of you who were confused by my new stuffed animal.

A birthday present 3 months early!
Ah! It's been such a great day so far!
Kyle's family left this morning (after making us a tasty breakfast!) to go to visit the Science Centre. Merely minutes after they left Ben and Kendric picked us up for an afternoon out.
It hadn't occured to any of us that it was Sunday, and the restaurants we frequent are usually pretty small. We must have tried five or six different restaurants before we found one that was open. We did get to enjoy some great Dim Sum at the Four Seas.
Afterwards, at my suggestion, we headed over to Dessarts Sweets to spoil ourselves. I got myself a bag of Jelly Bellies full of the best flavours**. I haven't had a day that felt more like summer to me so far, I think. We sat outside Dessarts while we finished our ice cream. I can't think of a better way to spend a nice, just warm enough, sunny summer day; sitting, enjoying an ice cream with friends.
Our next stop was Tramps. Kyle bought me the chess set I've been bugging him about for so long.
It's TRANSFORMERS! Yay. I think it will look better with a simpler, nicer chess board* but this will do for now!! So this ads something new for me to try to do: actually learn chess.
Finally was Comic Readers. I didn't see much that I wanted that Tramps didn't have, but I did find little Domo-kun. I do enjoy strange stuffed animals, so I think this is a good addition to my collection***.

** BUTTERED POPCORN!

of fortunes and hats
You will have many friends when you need them.*
Today has been an eventful day! Kyle's mom and youngest brother Scott are in town today to get some school supplies. We picked up his sister Chelsea and went for lunch at Saigon by Night. That's my fortune up at the top there!
Then we picked up my new bike and took it into the shop. It's going to need a bit of work and possibly a new chain, but ohhh man I can't wait to ride that bike.
Next we went to Walmart for a bit, and to avoid hanging around Walmart being bored, Chelsea and I went to Boes, a handbag store. I found the coolest hat! Chelsea had a great idea to use it for my halloween costume. I'm sure I can swing a superhero costume around it somehow.
On a sadder note, Chelsea's bike got stolen from our place sometime early this morning. Kyle and I hadn't noticed until his mom asked why he would keep a cut lock on the porch. They even tried to cut through my D-lock. I feel so bad for Chelsea. Losing a bike sucks, and I really don't want this to turn her off bikes forever.

Fact: Janice is awesome
Well, I suppose an introduction is a good direction to go in my first step out into the blogosphere.
Hi there! My name is Alana, and I am what many people would classify a nerd, but I am also a girl. Now, this might not seem like that big of a deal to someone with an outside perspective, but I can assure you that when you are one of very few girls in a faculty that is quite small to begin with, it matters. Last September I started my first year of university studying Physics fresh out of high school. Needless to say, it did not take long for some of the physics crew to start asking me out.*
Janice, sometimes referred to among our friends as 'The Other Girl in Physics', can sympathize with this problem of too many dicks. Nerd bait, or ηεπδ βαιτ, was Janice's great idea for sexy underwear, and she was kind enough to suggest that as a title.
Let's all take a moment to thank Janice for the amazing title of this new blog. As much as I'd like to take credit for it, my only claim in it is the word 'chronicles'.
Ohhh man, it is much too late to try to form sentences. I still have to get my new bike** into the bike shop tomorrow!
Its time to take some advice from (who else?)
Janice: being awake is for chumps and I no longer want to be a chump
*Please note that not that all of these attempts failed. This is when I started dating Kyle, and I live with him now, so I guess him asking me out was cool. :)
**NEW BIKE OMG. I swear I wont be over this excitement for a while.
